The single-number formulas were developed for medication dosing and differ by design. The BMI range is the most useful guide for most people — anywhere inside it is considered healthy.
How is ideal weight calculated?
There's no single "ideal" weight — different formulas give different answers, and a healthy weight is best thought of as a range. This calculator shows four classic estimates:
- Devine (1974): the most widely used, originally for drug dosing.
- Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983): refinements of Devine based on actuarial data.
- Hamwi (1964): a quick clinical rule of thumb.
All four use only sex and height. The BMI-based range (weight that puts your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9) is generally the most practical target because it acknowledges that healthy bodies come in a range of builds.
Once you have a target, the TDEE calculator tells you how many calories to eat to get there, and the BMI calculator tracks where you are now.
